  1. This November, Albuquerque date by Conference Call manages to produce (very satisfying) new variations on an old formula. The quartet, which sits comfortably somewhere between the hard outer edges of the mainstream and free improvisation, includes multiple reeds player Gebhard Ullmann and the leaders of the Fonda/Stevens Group. The drummer's chair has been subject to a non-lethal version.

The Conference Call Project In the notes to Live at the Outpost Performance Space, Michael Jefry Stevens tells of how he met Ullmann back in through the common friend of Phil Haynes (of Basement Research). Shortly thereafter, the idea of the band Conference Call was created. Stevens brought in his long-time musical partner, bassist Joe Fonda.

  7. referencing Mala In Cuba, CD, Album, BWOODCD. The best tracks on this album are the ones that are most derivative of Cuban ethnic music and least similar to Mala's dubstep background (e.g. "Como Como"). In other tracks, Mala's idea of a Cuban influence is adding some Latin-sounding percussion. I don't understand why this is so highly rated.
